Prince is a mysterious and malevolent adversary to Edgar. He was the reason that Edgar was orphaned and his family home burned. He is the cause of many misfortunes and destroyed lives in the series. His existence has been around longer than human's wont and it is hinted that he maintains his soul in the world of the living by choosing new host bodies. Due to Edgar's intersecting royal bloodlines he was chosen as the ideal vessel for Prince's soul. Edgar eventually becomes aware of this and has contemplated if his death wouldn't be a deterrent to Prince's continued reign of malice.
